Welcome to Wyrmwood Studios, a blog dedicated to TTRPG Design. Out motto; Design the Games You Want to Play. We stand by it and we help fellow creators, GMs and players find tools, guides and inspiration, to continue growing our community and make our hobby better. Last week we talked about designing dice mechanics, and I wanted to make this weekend more romantic and set sail for the homebrew weapons for TTRPG campaigns. There is an indescribable beauty in the fantastical cool looking weapons, the ones that we all picture ourselves wielding. If I sound crazy to you, I hope reading further will make more sense- or not.
From a designer’s standpoint anyway, creating homebrew content and spicy details for the few who will notice and appreciate, is one of the most exciting and rewarding aspects of the hobby. You have the chance to bring your own flavor to the game, surprise and immerse and players in your world. But when you’ve actually tried crafting your own flaming Greatsword, you probably asked yourself- How do I make this thing balanced now? After all, no one wants a game derailed by an overpowered weapon—or a disappointed player stuck with something underwhelming.
In this guide, we’ll break down the key principles of homebrew weapons design for your D&D or any TTRPG Campaigns or Games, and as always, keep them fun and fair. Plus, stick around to snag a free weapon design template to kickstart your creative process!
Why do we care about Homebrew Weapons?
Given the introduction, it is needless to say that weapons in TTRPGs are more than just tools for damage. They tell us stories, reflect cultures, shape the way a character can interact with the world and above all, they give off a certain vibe. A legendary sword might hint at a kingdom’s fall, while a cursed dagger could whisper secrets of a mysterious cult. A well-designed weapon doesn’t just give you raw stats; it thickens the plot.
But there’s another reason that this is a topic worth of discussion, and that is the poorly designed weapons, which can cause problems and disappointment, and thus striking the right balance ensures your creation feels both exciting and fair.
Principles of Homebrew Weapon Design
Without further introductions here are the top 6 principles that I like to point out:
1. Define the Weapon’s Role In the TTRPG
Every weapon should serve a purpose. Ask yourself:
- Is it designed for brute force (high damage)?
- Does it emphasize utility (status effects or crowd control)?
- Is it situational (effective in specific scenarios)?
For example, a “Blizzard Bow” might not have the highest damage output, but its ability to slow enemies could be a game-changer in a strategic encounter.
2. Balance Damage and Utility
Players love weapons that pack a punch—but balance is key. Compare your weapon to existing options in the game. Does it:
- Deal significantly more damage?
- Offer unique effects that no other weapon does?
To maintain fairness, weapons with powerful abilities should come with trade-offs. Maybe they require attunement, are fragile, or have limited charges. For instance, a staff that unleashes fireballs might need to recharge for a full day after three uses.
3. Add Flavor with Special weapon Abilities
Here’s where you can let your creativity shine. Special abilities make weapons memorable, but they need to fit both the world and the mechanics. Think about:
- Thematic Abilities: A “Stormblade” that crackles with lightning fits well in a high-magic setting.
- Risk and Reward: A cursed weapon that grants immense power but siphons the wielder’s health adds drama.
- Utility Over Combat: Not every ability needs to be combat-focused. A dagger that vibrates near poison can add depth to exploration and roleplay.
4. Keep It Simple
It’s easy to get carried away when designing homebrew weapons. While a weapon with ten different abilities sounds cool, it can bog down gameplay. Focus on one or two standout features that align with the weapon’s role. Clarity is king— players should understand what the weapon does at a glance.
5. Test, Test, Test!
Playtesting is the cornerstone of Homebrew Weapons Design and before launching TTRPG Campaigns, it is often a good practice to introduce it in a one-shot or have a “trusted” player try it out. Pay attention to:
- How it affects encounters.
- Whether players gravitate toward it too heavily.
- Any unintended interactions with other mechanics.
Be prepared to adjust. Balance isn’t static—it evolves as you see the weapon in action.
Common Pitfalls to Avoid
Even seasoned designers make mistakes. Here are some red flags to watch for:
- Overpowered Stats: Avoid stacking high damage with powerful effects.
- Neglecting Trade-Offs: Every strong weapon should have a drawback, whether it’s limited use or a hefty attunement cost.
- Ignoring the Narrative: A weapon’s lore should justify its power. Why does the “Soulfire Scimitar” burn with an unquenchable flame?
Examples of Balanced Homebrew Weapons
My humble attempt below to spark your imagination:
Flamebringer Axe
- Damage: 1d12 slashing + 1d6 fire.
- Special Ability: Once per long rest, the axe can unleash a wave of fire in a 15-foot cone.
- Drawback: Requires attunement. If the wielder takes cold damage, they suffer disadvantage on attack rolls until the end of their next turn.
Shadowpiercer Dagger
- Damage: 1d4 piercing.
- Special Ability: Grants advantage on stealth checks while in darkness. On a critical hit, the target’s vision is obscured for one turn.
- Drawback: The dagger grows cold and deals 1 damage to the wielder each time it’s used to kill.
